The book covers the actor's theater roots and 30-year career in showbiz, from his big break in Pretty in Pink to being labeled a "show killer" pre- Two and a Half Men to (duh) Charlie Sheen. ![]() ![]() (But if you have some time, you should read it because it's wry, witty, engaging and incredibly self-deprecating.) Jon Cryer's memoir So That Happened was released this week, and we read it so you don't have to. ![]() ![]() Overall, this book lacked pizazz and excitement. It was a good story but just lacked in execution. ![]() There wasn’t too much foreshadowing or hinting that made everything obvious and predictable. And when the secrets were revealed they were actually somewhat surprising. The mystery really built up well at the beginning. It kept you intrigued through most of the first half of the book. The Emerald Talisman had a pretty good story line. I really can’t praise this book enough but perhaps the best thing I can say is that this book is one I would proudly call my favorite book, a spot that has been notoriously empty for quite some time. There is so much story filling these pages and anyone seeking a genuinely unique high fantasy adventure will devour this novel. I was pleasantly surprised by this book at every turn. ![]() Alina as a narrator was the perfect voice: filled with real emotion but remaining true to her strong and perfectly witty self. Since their time in the orphanage the two have been inseparable and now they face their greatest challenge yet: to cross the Fold, a impenetrable darkness that splits their country in half and leaves very few trespassers alive. Mal and Alina are best friends, orphans, and working in Ravka’s First Army, serving their country in a never ending war. ![]() ![]() Leigh Bardugo’s debut is absolutely brilliant and unique. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pearl Pinkerton (voiced by Molly Lloyd in seasons 1-3 Katie Ryerson in season 4-present): Pearl is Pinkalicious and Peter's mother and inventor. He has some angst over being the youngest, as evidenced in "No Honking" in his song, "Music to Me". He introduced me to it in the form of letters reminding me that suffering was the basis of existence, which is the first Noble Truth in Buddhism. Gary Snyder noted that Kerouac did have an intelligent grasp of Eastern thought, also a learned grasp, and that’s something most people don’t realize. ![]() Kerouac read them very deeply, memorized many of them, and then went on to do other reading and other research and actually became a brilliant intuitive Buddhist scholar. He went to the library in San Jose, California and read a book called A Buddhist Bible, edited by Dwight Goddard-a very good anthology of classic Buddhist texts. So, Kerouac was interested in going back to the original historic sources. Kerouac mocked Cassady as a sort of homemade American “Billy Sunday with a suit” for praising Cayce, who went into trance states of sleep and then read what were called the Akashic records, and gave medical advice to the petitioners who came to ask him questions with answers which involve reincarnation. Jack Kerouac’s interest in Buddhism began after he spent some time with Neal Cassady, who had taken on an interest in the local California variety of New Age spiritualism, particularly the work of Edgar Cayce. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tersa is a trauma survivor, like many of the other characters in the book, but she’s dealt with it in different ways. The witch Tersa is the most powerful example of those with past traumas and mental illness being treated with respect and love. The young Jaenelle Angeliene’s family thinks she’s “crazy,” talking about an imaginary world of winged people, unicorns, and dragons. ![]() The series also has an unusual way of dealing with trauma, using the horrific acts of the past as powerful motivators for good works in the future.
